Clinical mass spectrometry at Singapore General Hospital: insights from a tertiary hospital laboratory

Prior to the early 2000s, liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS) was primarily used for pharmaceutical, environmental and biomolecular research. In recent years, however, some healthcare institutions started leveraging this technology for clinical applications too. One example is Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the largest and oldest public healthcare institution in Singapore, which began its journey with LC-MSMS in 2008, initially for immunosuppressants and later expanding to hormones and vitamins. In this talk at RED 2023, Ms Jayme Wong, SGH’s Senior Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist, describes how her institution implemented clinical LC-MSMS operationally and discusses its benefits, challenges and future prospects.
