The clinical microbiology laboratory plays a central role in optimising the management of infectious diseases and epidemiological surveys. New instruments have made a significant contribution toward this goal by reducing costs, improving workflow, identifying microbial pathogens, determining antimicrobial susceptibility, and generally providing significant input to patient care.
