A roundtable discussion on mass spectrometry under the theme of “Raising awareness of mass spectrometry in routine healthcare” was moderated by Professor Fumio Nomura from Chiba University, featured key opinion leaders Dr  Masatoshi Wakui from Keio University, Dr Masamitsu Maekawa from Tohoku University, and Director Takamaro Miyazawa from LSI Medience. The discussion highlighted the widespread use of mass spectrometry for microbial identification (MALDI-TOF) in hospital laboratories, recognising it as an essential technology, while noting its slower adoption in other areas such as clinical chemistry and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). The experts exchanged views on the high accuracy and utility of mass spectrometry and discussed challenges such as the need for education, specialist training, increased awareness, improved simplicity, faster turnaround times (TAT), reliability, and easier maintenance. This discussion underscored various perspectives on advancing mass spectrometry in clinical settings. This is Part 1 of a 2-part series.

English subtitles are now available with this video.
