China viewpoint: small changes for big results in lab performance

Lean management and intelligent automation can improve clinical lab performance dramatically, but how can lab leaders implement changes effectively? In this exclusive interview with Prof Xie Xiao Bing, Director of the Medical Laboratory and Pathology Center of the First Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, we gain insights from his unique approach to departmental management, including his philosophy of focusing on incremental gains and making rapid improvements in small steps.

“If it is difficult to make fundamental changes at one go, try to start with a small 5% change,” he says. This approach helped him to make many improvements at his lab, which covers a total area of 2000 square metres and employs more than 50 people.

The video also includes comments from Mr Zhu Zhen Hua, President of the First Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, who describes the crucial role that the clinical lab plays in the overall development of the hospital.
